Women's Competition Swimsuits
Swimsuit science has come a long way since the 1930's when women used loose-fitting costumes made of cotton. (Morales et al, 2019) Much research has gone into material and design, so much so that using the right swimsuit has now been scientifically shown to improve swimming performance. The choice of swimsuit is therefore important for competitive Masters swimmers. There are basic criteria for swimwear that must first be fulfilled. These can be found here.

Next, each swimmer then decides to what extent she would like her performance to be enhanced by her swimwear. This would determine the choice of swimsuit.

These competition suits were made for SPEED! The Speedo LZR has lowest drag when compared with other tech swimsuits! Check out next month's research topic!
Speedo was the first to produce high technology competition swimsuits. In conjunction with NASA (the United States National Aerospace Agency), Speedo produced the revolutionary Fastskin (LZR) swimsuits. The material used and the design of the swimsuit reduced drag in the water, improving swimming performance. Controversy surrounded the initial use of these revolutionary swimsuits in the Beijing Olympics.

Fastskin swimsuit technology has since been modified to comply with World Aquatics requirements. Speedo is still one of the most popular brands used among elite swimmers, as fastskin suits have been shown to decrease energy costs of swimming, optimising swimming efficiency & speed. (Chatard & Wilson, 2008)

Another special feature is the hydrophilic nature of the material which prevents water from being absorbed, allowing better buoyancy and a higher swimmer position in the water.

There is also special compression at specific points in the body and musculature which aids to increase distance per stroke. It has been scientifically proven than muscular physiology is altered with compression. This design may be just what you need to boost your swim to a podium finish!!
