The Science behind Swimming

Since 1994, there has been irrefutable evidence that regular physical activity slows the rate of decline of muscle strength, improves aerobic capacity, reaction time and joint flexibility.  Masters athletes at age 60 can perform significantly better than some sedentary individuals at age 30, indicating the prevention of a rapid age-related decline in Masters swimmers.  In a study published in 2024, Sports Scientists proved that high-intensity swimming training improves cardiovascular endurance, agility and psychosocial well-being in older adults.  There are so many benefits to Master Swimming!  Get on board!  Find out more about specific scientific evidence on swimming in our golden years!

What's special about breaststroke?

The energy cost of propulsion is highest for breaststroke when compared to front crawl, backstroke and butterfly.  Breaststroke requires greater swimmer exertion but does not achieve similar swimming speeds as the other strokes at competition level.

The Science of Swimming Accessories

To optimise performance, the correct gear for training and competition are essential.  For training, one would need goggles, caps, paddles, kickboards, pull buoys and flippers.  Those who wish to enhance their swimming competence may wish to include snorkels, nose clips, ankle bands, drag socks, resistance parachutes, ear plugs and watches.  An array of swimming accessories can be found at:
